#SIALeadToAchieve: Difficult Conversations

Difficult conversations are necessary at times. Changing the way we think about conflict can lead to successful resolution.

Here are 5 tips to successfully lead a difficult conversation:

Listen actively:

Reassure that you hear and understand the other person. Restate what they say to you in your own words.

Don’t repeat yourself:

Repetition can seem argumentative. Be confident in your words and consider how your communication may come across.

Be mindful:

Of your tone, body language, and facial expressions. Sometimes “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.?”

Remain open minded and do not take it personally:

Embracing diverse perspectives is key to addressing underlying conflict.

Focus on interests not positions:

Overlooking people’s interests may cause issues; focus on reconciling underlying interests instead of taking sides.
