A Life of Service: Theresa’s Story

Theresa Heidt-Vanderschoot of SI/Bend, OR (Northwestern Region), has been an advocate for marginalized populations since she was 16 years old. Her passion for helping others led her to a career in human services working with first-time at-risk mothers. One day, her organization was participating in a local women’s wellness fair that had been organized by the local Soroptimist club. The connection was instant and magical. After being invited to a Soroptimist meeting by a former co-worker, Theresa was in awe of the inspiring women in the room.

In that room were the women who would get Theresa through many life achievements and obstacles. They supported her through losing her mother and returning to school later in life. Theresa credits them with helping her move forward in her life and advancement.

Soroptimist gave me the strength I needed and the boost of confidence to further my efforts and advocate on a deeper level for women in my community and globally. I am particularly fond of the Live Your Dream Awards; I went back to school later in life and if not for the support of the strong women in Soroptimist behind me and encouraging me, I would not have made it through.

Theresa believes that the guidance that Soroptimist clubs provide is critical to the success of women and girls that we serve. “The love and support we give is almost more important than the financial help.” She modeled that support system when volunteering at a Dream It, Be It program. She talked to the girls about her experience as a mental health therapist and encouraged those interested in pursuing the career.

She believes that young women are lucky to have the Dream It, Be It program and wished she had had the chance to speak to various women about different professions when she was that age. Theresa believes that volunteering her time with Soroptimist is time well spent. She cannot imagine a life without Soroptimist women in it. Theresa has given her life to service and advocacy and has instilled those values in the women and girls she serves through Soroptimist. Every single day we, as Soroptimists, are changing lives!

Theresa is attending SIA’s Leadership Round Table and Leadership Fellows Programs to elevate her leadership skills! She is eager to use the knowledge she learns to pursue her aspiration of becoming the governor of her region. Theresa is hopeful she can gain confidence in leading and better understand the organization.
