Donor Spotlight: Ohran Choe

“I want to invest in their dreams, and give them hope and courage, because I believe in the power of education.”

Ohran Choe is a member of Korea’s SI/Daegu club. She has been a Soroptimist since 1995 and held many positions, including president of SI/Daegu (2004-2006), Korea Region Membership Chair (2008-2010), Korea Region Fundraising Chair (2010-2012), Korea Region Governor-elect (2012-2014) and governor (2014-2016). She has also served terms on the SIA Board (2018-2020) and the SIA Fundraising Council (2017-2018). In addition to her Soroptimist service, Ohran has been a leader and the board member of Girl Scouts of Korea for over 40 years. Ohran is an Inner Circle member of the Laurel Society and a proud donor to the Dream Big Campaign.

How did you first become involved with Soroptimist? 소롭티미스트를 처음에 어떻게 알게 되셨습니까?

한국어: 가까운 이웃에 대구클럽 선배가 알려 줬지만 평소 순수 봉사에를 하고 싶었는데 여성이 여성을 도운다는데 매력이 있었다.

ENGLISH: A senior member from the Daegu Club recommended Soroptimist to me. I have always wanted to do pure volunteer work, and I was attracted to the idea of women helping women.

What inspires you most about the work of Soroptimist? 소롭티미스트 활동을 열심히 하는 원동력은 무엇인가요?

한국어: 어려운 환경의 소녀와 여성이 가난의 대물림으로 교육을 잘 못받게 되므로 이러한 고리를 끊어주고 교육을 통해 계층 이동 사다리를 놓아줌으로 인해 그들의 미래가 희망적으로 바뀌어 더 나은 삶을 살아갈 수 있다는 그들의 변화를 보았기때문이다.

ENGLISH: Women and girls in difficult circumstances tend to be poorly educated due to the inheritance of poverty. But Soroptimist can change the future for these women and girls by helping them gain social mobility through education so they can live a better life.

Can you share one particular highlight from your volunteer experience? 당신의 자원봉사 경험에서 대표적인 사례 하나를 공유하실 수 있나요?

한국어: 한국은 세계 유일의 분단국가로서 공산치하에서 가난에 시달리는 이들이 자유를 찾아 탈북했지만 국가보조금으로는 바른 정착하기 어려운 실정에서 실패를 하며 극도로 어려움에 처해 있을 때  그들을 지속적으로 도와주며 용기와 힘을 북돋워 주어 '남북하나클럽' 을 차타하게 되었고 그들은 나중에 탈북한 여성들을 도와 주는 일을 하는 모습이 감격스럽다

ENGLISH: Korea is the only divided country in the world, where people suffering in poverty under the communist regime in North Korea defect to South Korea in search of freedom. But these refugees often struggle with the resettlement process. That’s why the North and South Hana Club was chartered, and I’m so proud to see this club becoming independent and helping the North Korean women who come to them for aid.

What inspired you to donate to Soroptimist? 소롭티미스트에 기부하시게 된 동기는 무엇인가요?

한국어: 이 사회가 점점 양극화 현상이 일어나고 있다 그 중의 하나인 빈부의 차가 심해지고 가난이 대물림 되고 있는 이유는 교육을 못받았기 때문이다 그래서 그 gap을 줄이고 그들이 희망과 용기를 갖고 빈곤한 삶을 바꿀 수 있도록 교육의 힘을 믿기에 교육을 통해  그들의 꿈에 투자하고 싶었다

ENGLISH: Society is becoming increasingly polarized, and the gap between rich and poor is getting bigger because those in poverty cannot get an education. I want to invest in their dreams, and give them hope and courage, because I believe in the power of education.

What would you say to others who might be considering making a donation? 기부를 망설이시는 분들께 어떤 말씀을 전하고 싶으신가요?

한국어: 함께하여 집단적 영향력을 발휘하며 더 많은 어려운 여성과 소녀를 함께 돕자고 전하고 싶다

ENGLISH: I want to convey that we can exert a collective influence and together we can help more women and girls in need.

What's your wish for the future of Soroptimist? 소롭티미스트의 미래에 관해 바라시는 바가 무엇인가요?

한국어: 교윸=소롭티미스트가 되도록 어려운 여성과 소녀들에게  더 많은 밝은 미래를 찾아 줄 수 있도록 함께  드림프로그램을 우리회원들 모두가 함께 선한 영향력을 넓혀가며 이 사회가 더욱 아름다운 사회를 만들어 갔으면 좋겠다

ENGLISH: I hope that all of our members will expand their influence and create a more beautiful society together so that we can build a brighter future for women and girls who are struggling.

Anything else you'd like to share? 추가로 나눌 만한 의견이 있으신가요?

한국어: 각 클럽과 리젼과 SIA본부가 가족이라는 개념으로 좀 더 따뜻하고 상호 긴밀한 유대관계를 갖고 서로 도와가며 회원 모두가$봉사의 즐거움을 누릴 수 있기를 바랍니다

ENGLISH: We hope that clubs, regions, and SIA headquarters can become even closer. We are like family, and we should always help each other and allow all members to enjoy the pleasure of volunteering.
