Why a Code of Conduct Matters: A Message from Taskforce Chair Peggy Gentile-VanMeter
SIA’s staff has been working alongside the board of directors to develop and launch our first Member and Leader Code of Conduct. This process was spurred by seeing feedback from lapsed member surveys that a lack of civility at the local level was causing members to leave the organization. This code, which is rooted in our shared values and expectations, supports a respectful, safe and inclusive environment for all members, and is crucial for our continued impact.
It establishes clear behavioral expectations, promotes ethical decision-making, and fosters a positive and respectful environment for all members. I know I personally have witnessed moments as a Soroptimist where I wish we would have had this kind of guidance, and I know implementing this code will benefit everyone!
SIA’s Member and Leader Code of Conduct is structured into five sections:
• Responsibility. Responsibility is our commitment to take ownership of the decisions we make or fail to make, the actions we take or fail to take, and the consequences that result.
• Respect. Respect is our commitment to show high regard for ourselves, others, and the resources entrusted to us. These resources may include people, money, reputation, the safety of others, and informational resources. An environment of respect engenders trust, confidence, and performance excellence by fostering collaboration—an environment where diverse perspectives and views are encouraged and valued.
• Fairness. Fairness is our commitment to make decisions and act impartially and objectively. Our conduct must be free from competing self-interest, prejudice, and favoritism.
• Honesty. Honesty is our responsibility to understand the truth and act transparently in our communications and conduct.
• Leadership. Leadership is a set of positive behaviors that help members align with SIA’s mission, vision, core values, and strategic objectives.
All members will be asked to sign the code of conduct later this club year to help create the kind of culture and experience we can all be proud of as Soroptimists. The code along with its governance process will provide clear standards and methods to handle issues at the club, region, and federation level to ensure we are all acting in alignment with our organizational values. In the coming months, there will be training opportunities and further information provided about the governance and enforcement process of the code. I look forward to seeing each and every member signing and, more importantly, living this important code!
