5 Simple Ways to Spot Phishing Scams

1. Don't panic over scary messages. Got an email saying your account will close in 24 hours or you owe money right now? Take a breath. Scammers love creating fake emergencies to make you act without thinking. Real companies don't operate this way. If you're concerned, look up their official phone number yourself and give them a call.

2. Look closely at who's really emailing you. Scammers are sneaky—they'll use addresses like "support@amaz0n.com" (notice that zero?) hoping you won't look twice. Before clicking anything, hover over the sender's name to see the actual email address. If something looks off, it probably is.

3. Type website addresses yourself. This is the simplest protection: don't click links in unexpected messages. Instead, open your browser and type the address directly or use a bookmark. It takes an extra few seconds but could save you a massive headache.

4. Trust your gut about weird wording. Does the email say "Dear Customer" instead of your name? See typos or awkward phrases? Legitimate companies have professional communications teams. If something feels off, it usually is.

5. Keep your personal info personal. Your bank will never email asking for your password. The IRS won't text you for your Social Security number. If anyone asks for sensitive information through email or text, it's a scam—no exceptions.
