“Beeswax Wrap Handcraft Workshop” Builds Circles of Exchange

Shout out to SI/Kumamoto (Japan Minami Region) who achieved 100% on the Club Roadmap and scored the second highest in the Best in Federation Award for engagement!

Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the club was unable to plan face-to-face charity projects in 2022. Member recruitment was also difficult, resulting in low club morale.

The club previously sold the SDG (sustainable development goal) product “beeswax wrap” for charity. Beeswax wrap is a reusable cloth wrap made by soaking the cloth in antibacterial beeswax. It is also used to support women’s employment in Thailand, which is in line with Soroptimist’s philosophy to economically empower women.

During COVID, there was no opportunity to directly explain its usage and social significance to people outside the club, and sales were lower than expected. To give themselves a much-needed boost, SI/Kumamoto decided to host a workshop to serve as a way to both recruit new members and engage current members, while introducing beeswax wraps and teaching how to make them by hand.

A Great Success!

Twenty club members and 16 non-members attended the workshop, which strengthened the bonds among club members as they shared the enjoyable experience of making beeswax wraps from the fabrics they brought with them.

It was also a great opportunity for potential members to learn about the club in a more casual setting. A young mother said she wanted to teach her children how to make beeswax wrap. Another attendant became a member, and several other attendees have also considered joining.

In addition, the workshop increased awareness of Soroptimist activities by distributing flyers and PR magazines at the event.

SI/Kumamoto would like to host another workshop to handcraft more SDG products in the future—hopefully with just as much success!
