Embracing Innovation in Our Translation Practices
As a global organization, Soroptimist International of the Americas, Inc.® is committed to making information and resources accessible to members across our six languages. We are also committed to embracing innovation and using our resources responsibly.
A New Direction for Translation
With the approval of the SIA Board of Directors, we will begin using artificial intelligence (AI) to translate communications and resources when appropriate. AI translation will enable us to:
Deliver translated content more efficiently
Make additional information available across our languages
Reduce translation costs
Provide members with more timely information
Choosing the Right Translation Method
AI translation will not replace professional translation in every situation. We are developing clear internal guidelines to determine the appropriate translation method based on the content, audience and importance of each communication.
Maintaining Quality and Care
When AI translation is used, we will follow established review and quality-control practices. As with any translation method, language can be nuanced, and we will continue working to ensure our communications are clear, accurate and respectful of the cultures and communities we serve.
Member Feedback is Important
Member feedback will be an important part of improving our process. If you notice language in an SIA communication that seems unclear, inaccurate or out of place, please let us know at siahq@soroptimist.org. Your feedback will help us identify issues, refine our guidelines, and improve future translations.
Supporting Our Global Membership
This board-approved direction allows SIA to embrace new technology while being fiscally responsible with organizational resources. It also gives us greater flexibility to share more content with members in a timely manner and supports a more inclusive member experience.
We appreciate your understanding as we incorporate these tools into our work and continue evaluating how they can best support our global organization.
