Empowered to Dream Again: Kharmen’s Story of Resilience and Renewal

For Kharmen, a 2018 Live Your Dream Award recipient, compassion has always come naturally. As a child, she was drawn to caring for those closest to her: family, friends, and elders. That instinct to nurture others blossomed into a clear purpose as she grew older. She dreamed of earning her degree and becoming a nurse, so she could make a real difference in people’s lives.

Originally from the Bahamas, Kharmen had recently moved to the U.S. after leaving an abusive relationship. She was determined to rebuild her life as a newly single mother, but financial hardship and self-doubt made that dream feel out of reach.

Receiving the Live Your Dream Award alleviated some of that strain. When Kharmen learned she’d been selected, she was overwhelmed with a mix of relief and gratitude. For the first time in a long time, she felt truly seen. The award reminded her that she wasn’t alone, and that others believed in her potential even when she doubted herself.

[The] award lifted a huge burden off my shoulders. It allowed me to stay focused on my studies, continue providing for my daughter, and keep moving forward toward my goals without being paralyzed by financial stress. It truly made all the difference.

The award opened the door to a life she had only ever imagined. She became a first-generation college graduate and a registered nurse. Now, she serves in both community and ambulatory health settings, and through her own business, offers services as a nurse entrepreneur to those who need it most.

That scholarship wasn’t just financial aid — it was a lifeline. Today, I’m a registered nurse, a business owner, and a mother raising a confident, driven daughter. I strive every day to give back through compassionate care and mentorship. I hope my story shows what’s possible when women support other women. Your investment changed a life — and I carry that gratitude into everything I do.
