Member Spotlight: Lithsy Fernández

A member of SI/Oruro, Bolivia (America del Sur Region), Lithsy Fernández joined Soroptimist in 2009. She shares what she loves about the Live Your Dream Awards.

When invited to be a member of the club I just had a simple idea of the work they have done, but as time went through and realizing all the aspects that it implies I felt that it was the right place to be and I could do something to help other people, I have given all my effort to learn about the programs, participate and support all the activities.

The most important experience I had was the victory of my club in the Live Your Dream Awards program when our recipient received both the region and federation-level awards. Sandra was as happy as we were. She was suffering too much for the loss of her son, the violence of her husband and the hard work she had to do to sustain her family, then she had to face a divorce. But she overcame it and finished studying to become a hairdresser. She spent many hours going and coming back from school, returning to her house tired but she overcame it.

I learned a lot from her integrity and willpower. The fact of how this experience opened a door to hope and happiness. Now she works in her own salon and offers other women her services.

Our organization touches women's lives like it did with Sandra and gives the opportunity to see a light between all the darkness. How satisfying it is to be a part of Soroptimist and the huge work all the members around the world make together, united for one cause.
