SI/Austin, TX, Uplifts Single Moms with Big Goal Accelerator Project

Soroptimist Women's Education Assistance Grant

In the heart of South Central Region, SI/Austin, TX, has an inspiring program that uplifts single mothers. This initiative, the Soroptimist Women's Education Assistance Grant, is both a Big Goal Accelerator Project and a great effort for the #SoroptimistUpliftHER focus on single moms.

Now in its second year, the program provides critical support to women overcoming significant challenges, including domestic violence and substance abuse, while navigating the strains of solo parenting.

SI/Austin distributed $1,300 in grants to five single mothers who are enrolled in courses to improve their job prospects, with funds assisting with expenses like car repairs and course materials.

The club has dedicated 42 hours of volunteer time to support the project, and this year, launched a new partnership with Arms of Hope, a well-known nonprofit organization with three facilities around Central Texas, to increase awareness of their club while expanding the reach and impact of this meaningful initiative.

In March, the club hosted a celebration with program participants, their children, the executive director of Arms of Hope, and its staff. The club stays in touch via email and provides mentoring to the recipients. One grant recipient, aspiring to become a court reporter, connected with a club member who worked for many years in the field, forging a valuable relationship that will support her new career path.

This project exemplifies Soroptimist service and shows how clubs can respond to local needs while they #UpliftHER.
