Chioma: Award Recipient Turns Grief into Purpose

Two years ago, Live Your Dream Awards® Recipient Chioma made a leap of courage. She packed up her life and moved to Canada with her three children after unexpectedly losing her husband to cancer. His illness had gone undetected in their home country until it reached a terminal stage, leaving her suddenly widowed and solely responsible for her family's future.

Starting over as an immigrant meant rebuilding from the ground up—navigating financial hardship, isolation and grief, all while keeping her family stable. Through all the challenges, she held onto the belief that education was the path forward. But going back to school was more than education: “It is a path to healing, stability and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.”

A New Journey

Chioma is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing and plans to become a registered nurse and, eventually, a nurse practitioner. Her choice to study nursing is deeply personal. Her husband's illness showed her firsthand how much compassion, patience and presence can mean to a patient and their family during their most vulnerable moments.

“Learning that I was receiving the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award was overwhelming in the most beautiful way. For a moment, I felt seen not just for my struggles, but for my perseverance. After everything I have been through, it felt like a reminder that my efforts matter and that I am not alone on this journey.”

“I felt deep gratitude, relief and hope. Relief, because the financial support eases a heavy burden. Gratitude, because someone believed in my dream. And hope, because it renewed my strength to keep going, even on the hardest days.

This award means more than recognition. It feels like a hand being extended to lift me forward, not just for myself, but for my children and the future I am working so hard to build.”

Each year, we award more than $3.6 million in education grants to over 2,500 women, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles, like the inspiring stories that you just read. We are so honored to be part of their stories. By investing in education, we help women break cycles of poverty and become advocates for their communities—women like Chioma turn personal loss into a calling to serve others. This incredible work is only possible with your support.

By investing in programs like the Live Your Dream Awards, Soroptimist donors and members help women achieve brighter futures for themselves and their families.
