Member Spotlight: Uplifting Stories from the Philippines

This Membership May, we’re featuring three inspiring women who embody the Soroptimist mission across the Philippines. Rooted in service, resilience and sisterhood, their stories reflect a global movement of women lifting one another up through education and empowerment.

Marivic, SI/Magalang

From New Member to Proud Soroptimist

Marivic still remembers the moment she was invited to join Soroptimist. A friend leaned in and simply said, “You belong here.” She didn’t know then how deeply those three words would shape the course of her life.

“I was already involved in community work,” she recalls, “but I felt something was missing — a space where I could grow, lead, and serve with other women who shared the same passion.”

Only eight months into her Soroptimist journey, Marivic found herself stepping into club leadership. That early vote of confidence confirmed what she already felt in her heart: when you’re aligned with your purpose, the right paths appear.

But for Marivic, fulfillment doesn’t come from titles. Her proudest moments come from stories like this:

“One woman I will never forget is someone I met at church. A young mother, working as a street vendor, quietly dreaming of finishing her studies. Through the Live Your Dream Awards, our club supported her education. Today, she's a graduate, gainfully employed, and building a better life for her family. Her journey reminded me that sometimes, all a woman needs is for someone to believe in her.”

That belief—in potential, in possibility—has grounded Marivic’s Soroptimist experience ever since.

“What has kept me anchored all these years is the organization’s commitment to real, lasting impact. We don’t just give handouts—we offer hope, direction, and opportunities that change lives. Education, mentorship, and empowerment are powerful tools, and Soroptimist knows how to use them.”

Over the years, her Soroptimist path has taken her across the Philippines, and even across the world. One of the most transformative moments? Attending an international convention.

Being in a room full of women from different countries and cultures—all speaking the same language of service—was powerful beyond words. We may be separated by geography, but we are united by mission and compassion.

Marivic’s hope for the future is simple and profound: that Soroptimist continues to grow in compassion, relevance and innovation—and that every woman who hears about the organization feels what she felt that very first day: You belong here.

“Soroptimist has helped shape the woman I am today. It’s not just about changing lives — it’s about discovering your purpose, finding your people, and stepping into your power. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.”

Rowena, SI/Kabisig

Finding New Purpose Through Helping Others

For Rowena, service has always played a large part in her life. As the wife of a retired police colonel, she dedicated many years to community service while her husband served on the force. Through outreach programs and initiatives, she found purpose in uplifting the lives of others.

“When my husband retired, I naturally shifted my attention to our growing family,” Rowena shares. “My children were entering new chapters—one working abroad, another in college and my youngest still in high school. I embraced motherhood fully, but something in me still longed for the joy of helping others.”

That opportunity came in 2020, when a former colleague invited her to learn more about Soroptimist. Intrigued and inspired, Rowena joined SI/Kabisig. Unfortunately, the pandemic struck, limiting participation to virtual meetings.

“I was eager to serve, but instead found myself on Zoom calls, watching and learning from a distance,” she recalls. “Even then, I felt connected. I knew this was where I was meant to be.”

When restrictions were lifted, Rowena was finally able to immerse herself in hands-on Soroptimist work. The experience rekindled her passion and gave her a new purpose.

“As we implement the Dream Programs in our community, I see firsthand how education and mentorship can transform lives,” Rowena shares.

Her dedication did not go unnoticed. In recognition of her leadership and unwavering commitment, Rowena was selected to serve as president of her club, a role she embraces with pride.

“Through Soroptimist, I find fulfillment, experience personal growth and form meaningful friendships with like-minded women who share the same vision of service.”

Maria, SI/Batangas Downtown

Creating Lasting Change Through Empowerment

Maria’s journey with SI/Batangas Downtown began when a close friend encouraged her to join. What started as a simple desire to give back quickly transformed into a deeper commitment to a mission that resonated with her values.

She was particularly inspired by Soroptimist’s focus on empowerment over charity—an approach that aligned with her belief in creating meaningful, lasting change.

What inspires me most is the way Soroptimist addresses real challenges that women and girls face every day. Rather than simply offering charity, Soroptimist provides opportunities. Whether it’s through the Live Your Dream Awards or Dream It, Be It, Soroptimist is focused on long-term empowerment.

Maria was also drawn to the global sisterhood Soroptimist fosters—an interconnected network of women working across borders for a shared cause.

“I'm particularly inspired by how Soroptimist builds a global network of support. No matter where you are, there are Soroptimists working toward the same goals—helping women achieve economic independence, escape violence, and pursue their dreams.”

One of the most touching success stories from her club experience was witnessing a woman who received a Live Your Dream Award. Facing significant financial and personal struggles, the recipient was able to continue her education with the club’s support—a testament to how small acts of support can lead to life-changing outcomes.

Maria believes the Dream Programs are among the most impactful initiatives Soroptimist offers, not just providing temporary relief, but opening doors to lasting change.

“What I love most about these programs is that they address the root causes of economic insecurity. Education is one of the most powerful ways to break the cycle of poverty, and these programs provide the support women and girls need to succeed.”

Looking ahead, Maria hopes to see Soroptimist’s reach continue to expand—bringing in more young women with fresh perspectives and energy to carry the mission forward.

“My wish is for Soroptimist to continue growing and reaching more women worldwide. I hope that more young women join the organization, bringing fresh ideas and energy to continue our mission for generations to come.”
