Convention Workshop Descriptions

During SIA’s Virtual 47th Biennial Convention on July 22 and 23, you’ll get to attend workshops both days to learn practical strategies about leadership, philanthropy, impactful storytelling, engaging globally and more. Check out all the workshops below.

After each workshop session will be a short Q&A for you to ask questions. But you may also ask questions ahead of time, and they may be answered live during convention. Please send workshop questions to siahq@soroptimist.org.

Day 1 – July 22

Soroptimist International: Engaging Globally
Presenters: Maureen Maguire, 2022-2023 SI President and Dawn Marie Lemonds 2017-2018 SIA President

SIA is a community that is a part of a much larger community, that is Soroptimist International (SI). During this session attendees will:

  • Understand SI's Organizational structure and where SIA fits in. 

  • Learn what SI's key initiatives are.

  • Find out how they can engage globally with SI through events, volunteer opportunities and more! 


Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in Membership 
Presenter: Karen Hall, Northwestern Region Membership Chair

Karen Hall

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) is key to a thriving membership. Let's explore and recommit to our core values of diversity and fellowship.  During this session, attendees will:

  • Learn key terms and definitions related to DEIB.

  • Examine examples of microaggressions and hidden biases.

  • Explore how to make SIA clubs more inclusive and engaging.


Fill Your Leadership Toolbox with Essential Skills
Presenter: Terry Baldwin, Si/Benicia, CA (Founder Region), Club President

When our leadership toolbox is up to date, we can carry out our mission and vision successfully.  Make sure you have the tools necessary to guide your club and region as we work together to achieve our Big Goal.  During this session, attendees will:

  • Learn the top skills of successful SIA leaders

  • Examine examples of leading through change.

  • Understand how leadership strengthens clubs and helps us reach our organizational goals.


Day 2 – July 23

Supporting our Big Goal
Presenter: Terry Rose, Desert Coast Region Program Chair

Our Big Goal isn't possible without our members being invested in both our programs and our philanthropy.  During this session, attendees will: 

  • Learn about the potential global impact of our Big Goal.

  • Examine examples of successful clubs and regions supporting the Big Goal.

  • Explore how to support the Big Goal at the member and club level.  


Storytelling with Impact
Presenter: Sue Riney, SI Public Relations Liaison

Sue Riney

Brand storytelling is no longer a “nice to have.” It is a must have. Sharing your experiences and the work you’re doing locally in a strategic way will ultimately maximize SIA’s visibility and impact. During session, attendees will:

  • Learn key components of what makes a story impactful.

  • Learn simple ways you can share your story for maximum exposure.
